How does it work?

First, there's nothing to download or install. Splendid Speaking is an online course so all you need is a web browser and an internet connection. You sign-up for a username and password account and then you can log in from any computer - at work, at home, in your local library or internet cafe. When you have half an hour to spare in your busy day you could be working through a speaking strategy or brushing up on your vocabulary!

Volume 1: Introductions and Small Talk
In this volume you'll learn several key skills and strategies to help you make a success of Part 1 and 3 of the IELTS Speaking exam:

  • Explore situations where it's appropriate to give short and extended answers to questions.
  • Make an impact with a 15-second introduction.
  • Learn how to give examples to add impact to your responses.
  • Relate a S.T.A.R. story that illustrates a personal achievement.
  • Examine the importance of non-verbal communication (body language) and how to use it to your advantage.

Volume 2: Powerful Presentations
In this volume you'll learn the following strategies ideal for the Part 2 'Long Turn' in the IELTS Speaking exam:

  • Learn FIVE memorable ways to start the long turn.
  • Practise how to signpost your long turn clearly to help the examiner follow your talk.
  • Learn how to make your long turn memorable even though you have little time to prepare.
  • Practise using pauses for greater effect.

Other key speaking strategies will help you when working with graphics such as graphs or photographs - valuable skills for academic study or the world of work.

And that's not all…

In addition to these 12 key strategies you can test your knowledge of useful topical collocational phrases, question formation and the particular features of spoken English such as the use of 'heads and tails' and 'vague' language.
